Gamecocks to open season ranked No. 20
Senior Suzie Lee is one of several South Carolina veterans that will look to mix with a talented incoming freshman class when the season begins this weekend. The South Carolina women’s golf team is set to kick off its much anticipated 2013 season this weekend at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C. The Gamecocks, ranked No. 20 by Golfweek’s preseason countdown, return from a year in which the team reached its fourth consecutive NCAA Championship finals appearance under coach Kalen Harris.

Allden returns to Gamecock cross country
Andrew Allden, USC’s new distances and cross country assistant coach, believes the cross country team has the potential to be a top-ranked program nationally. Allden, who has 27 years of coaching experience, coached at South Carolina from 1996 to 2001. During his stint in Columbia, Allden led the Gamecock cross country team to their best Southeastern Conference Championship finish in program history — No. 5 — in 1999.

Martin preparing for new season
Head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin is taking all the necessary preparations this off-season to ensure the Gamecocks have a successful 2013-2014 campaign. Martin, entering his second season as men’s head coach, believes that despite a 14-18 record (4-14 SEC record), the team played some good basketball down the stretch of the season and left a lot of room for improvement.

Carolina football facing favorable foes
For the first time in a few seasons, the South Carolina Gamecocks have a favorable schedule, in-conference and out. The Gamecocks open the college football season on Thursday night when the North Carolina Tar Heels come into Columbia for the battle of the Carolinas. North Carolina provides a bigger threat than most teams who have faced the Gamecocks week one in recent years.

Crucial SEC contests may help send USC to Atlanta
Summer practice schedules have been announced, media days are over and Southeastern Conference fans have only one thing on their minds: the beginning of a new season. Last season, five teams from the SEC (No. 1 Alabama, No. 5 Georgia, No. 5 Texas A&M, No. 8 South Carolina, and No. 9 Florida) finished in the AP’s top 10, while LSU and Vanderbilt finished in the top 25 (No. 14 LSU and No. 23 Vanderbilt).

Gamecocks eyeing an SEC title in 2013
South Carolina is preparing for another successful season, and head coach Steve Spurrier and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney spoke about that preparation and last year’s 11-win season last Thursday at the Southeastern Conference Media Days. “Our message this year about South Carolina football is pretty simple,” Spurrier said, “We believe we’re capable of winning the SEC … Win the division, and win our first ever SEC Championship, that’s the goal,”.

Gamecock captures silver for Team USA
South Carolina senior Michael Flach earned a silver medal in the 4×200-meter relay for Team USA at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia. Flach, earning his first-career international medal Monday, was a part of Team USA’s final swim time of 7:13.58 to finish in second place. Flach swam as the leadoff leg for Team USA in the preliminary heat, helping the team earn a time of 7:19.92, which was the second-fastest time of the two preliminary heats.

USC represents in Russian games
USC coaches McGee Moody, Curtis Frye and Frank Martin are representing the United States in Team USA World University Games in Russia. Moody, whose contract to coach swimming and diving was renewed in June, will serve as Team USA’s swimming assistant coach. Along with Moody, senior Michael Flach will be representing Team USA in the coming 12 days.

Basketball roster undergoes changes
The South Carolina men’s basketball team will have a much different look this season. The Gamecocks’ roster feature seven new recruits, including the No. 11 ranked shooting guard Sindarius Thornwell. Thornwell, from Lancaster S.C., played his senior season at Virginia high school powerhouse Oak Hill Academy.

New LGBT coordinator appointed
USC’s new Coordinator for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Programs Kayla Lisenby arrived on campus Monday. Lisenby fills a position that was added to USC’s faculty in 2011, but was vacant for most of the 2012-2013 school year. She will coordinate workshops, programs, and a variety of services for LGBT students and allies — heterosexual students who actively support the LGBT community.

USC adds to 2014 football recruiting class

Kevin Crosby, from Bamberg, S.C., is the second four-star recruit in the 2014 recruiting class to commit to the Gamecocks.

3 Gamecock seniors chosen in MLB draft
Dantzler, Webb, Westmoreland chosen by Blue Jays, Yankees, Marlins. As South Carolina’s season came to an end in Chapel Hill, three Gamecocks were chosen to continue their baseball careers in the big leagues. Tyler Webb, L.B. Dantzler, and Adam Westmoreland were among 32 other South Carolina college and high school players to be selected in this year’s MLB Draft.

Martin picks Clark as associate head coach
Former Tulane, Miami coach has 9 March Madness appearances under his belt. Head basketball coach Frank Martin has added Texas A&M Corpus Christi head coach Perry Clark to the Gamecocks coaching staff. Clark has also served as head coach at Tulane and Miami and has over 30 years of NCAA men’s basketball coaching experience.

Students learn to save money, environment through hands-on events. With just one cup of washing soda, borax and a grated bar of soap, you can do 48 washes at 6 cents a load -— 1/4 of the cost of store-bought detergent — according to Sustainable Carolina. College students are no strangers to finding creative ways of saving money; Sustainability Week is designed to help them learn to save the environment at the same time.

I am Salvatore Vincent Costa from River Edge, New Jersey. I attended Bergen Catholic High School from 2006-2010 and currently am a full-time student at the University of South Carolina.

I have always had a profound love for sports which led to my decision in 2010 to pursue a career as a sports journalist. Currently, I write for The Odyssey and The Daily Gamecock. I enjoy covering the NBA, NFL, and College Athletics.

In addition to sports journalism, I have developed an interest in America's business world. I enjoy following the top business stories and keeping up with current events.
